The 543rd Xiang Shan Scientific Meeting on Regenerative Medicine: Solving the new issues in science and the bottleneck puzzles in application

The 543rd Xiangshan Scientific Meeting, with the theme on Regenerative Medicine-Solving the new issues in science and the bottleneck puzzles in application was successfully held during 14th to 15th October 2015 in Fragrant Hill hotel, Beijing China. Totally 47 scientists from interdisciplinary field attended the Meeting. Prof. Xiaobing Fu, Zhengguo Wang, Zuze Wu, Shengshou Hu, Yilin Cao, Qi Zhou were the executive chairman. Prof. Jun Wu, the Editor-in-Chief and Dr. Guangping Liang, the managing editor of Burns & Trauma were honored to be invited attending the Meeting.

The Xiang Shan Scientific Meeting is a high-level, inter-disciplinary, small-scale, regular and academic, aiming to explore the scientific leading edge and promote knowledge innovation in the Chinese scientific circle. Since its establishment in 1993, 534 inter-disciplinary seminars have been held, including 3 seminars concerning regenerative medicine. This time the Meeting centers on transformation and application mainly focused on the fields of tissue injury, stem cell and tissue engineering.

Presentations and speeches
During the 2 days high-profile scientific meeting there were 2 keynote commentary speeches and 15 presentations closely around 3 central topics, covering stem cells and reproduction of a variety of tissues & organs, construction of tissue engineered giant organs, and development & prospect of regenerative medicine. The keynote commentary speeches included Prof. Xiaobing Fu’s presentation “In-depth problems of Regenerative Medicine: Simultaneous repair and regeneration of multiple tissues at the site of injury” and Prof. Zuze Wu’s presentation on “Transformation and application of regenerative medicine research achievements”. Other 15 speeches are all surrounding the 3 central topics. The contents include repair and regeneration of stem cells and myocardium, research on treating ischemic cardiomyopathy with MSC, new strategies of treating multi-tissue injury with stem cells, and small molecular compounds guided tissue regeneration; research progress and challenge of tissue engineering in cartilage, neural, cornea, muscular organs and motor system; biological material research on slow-release growth factors, connotation construction of wound repair promoted by the integrated innovation, regulations and supervisions for the quality of therapeutic stem cells and so on.

Topics under discussion
During the Meeting, the specialists spoke out freely. They carried out a hot discussion on the scientific problem to be addressed and difficulties in achievement transformation and application in the development of regenerative medicine. They followed the administrative regulations of Europe, the United States, Japan and Korea in stem cell and tissue engineering research and discussed the reasons of problems in management system and government regulation in the development of regenerative medicine. In the meantime, they put forward some workable suggestions and solutions according to their experience and problems in development. They clarified the basic scientific problems to be addressed in the regeneration and tissue engineering research, such as how to guarantee the quality of stem cells. They agreed to formulate reasonable management rules and regulations of stem cells and tissue engineering. They suggested to purse breakthroughs from such stem cells and tissue engineering of simple function as bones, cartilages and skins, and made them go to the market at first, and finally promoted the development of complex organs.

Academic record
The Meeting achievement will be made into minutes and will be published as an academic monograph Regenerative Medicine: Transformation and Application. Highlights of the Meeting: (1) Focused on the new scientific problems and difficulties in transformation and application, tested the transformation and application of the regenerative medical achievements in the past ten years, and made a plan about the objective of regenerative medicine to be realized in the next 5-10 years; (2) Realized an interdisciplinary cross discussion; (3) Centered on training excellent young and middle-aged scientific researchers, including over 20 outstanding young scholars and the Yangtze River scholars attending the Meeting. The number of young scholars is increasing continuously, which shows the attention of China on the regenerative medicine research and indicates a good prospect of the development of regenerative medicine of China.
